Character Name: Satya Vaswani | Symmetra

Personality: It isn’t often that genius manifests itself at the intersection of dance and science, but that is where Satya Vaswani thrives. As an Architech for Vishkar Corporation, she uses hard light technology in order to construct a more perfect world, just the way she envisions it. As someone who craves order and precision the way another person might crave a cigarette, she has made it her goal to use her talents to make the world around her more harmonious. Her worldview is incredibly black-and-white; there is order or there is chaos, and very little room in between for middle ground. She witnesses a young girl’s face after being burnt in a huge fire, and her first thought is what a shame it is, that the girl’s face ruined, and she was so perfect before. It is hard for her to see past the surface impressions of a place or person or thing, to find value in imperfections. To Satya, imperfections are merely a starting place to be improved upon. She looks at the girl’s burnt face and only thinks of how Vishkar will fix it.
There are some sectors of her life that Satya is unable to control; finding where she fits in the world and navigating social interactions are a big stumbling block for her, as she is on the autism spectrum. She is often rude without meaning to be or even realizing it, and her single-minded pursuit of what she deems ‘better’ can be off-putting to some. Her mannerisms are often severe and condescending; many of her in-game voice lines express unimpressed distaste for her fellow heroes, or a desire to put them in their proper place. She finds it easier to be aloof and cold at times than to try and open up and make a genuine connection, and face the possibility of failure. There is also an element of moral ambiguity to her actions, as her work for the Vishkar corporation includes a good amount of corporate espionage and sabotage—which is where the persona of Symmetry comes in. However, one rule she stands firm on is not killing unless absolutely necessary; she finds taking life without dire cause to be distasteful. But while her morals do seem to be ambiguous, Satya is also shown to question Vishkar’s motives, and whether or not her own actions in their name are helping more than they are hurting the effort to make the world better.
However, there is a softer side to Satya. She is talented at creating hard-light constructions using Vishkar’s technology, but instead of following the taught approach—mechanical and procedural movements—she developed her own way of weaving constructs using traditional Indian dance movements. This is the best demonstration of her ability to see the world in a different way, her natural talent in problem-solving and attention to detail. She might be described as anal, but really Satya functions best under controlled circumstances. Things being neat and tidy means she’s able to keep her mind clear and focused on what matters. Chaos and disorder, crowds and loud noises and dirt and disrepair, these are all things that cause her great turmoil and make it incredibly difficult for her to function.
